Let the Baby Lead You

You may have missed your new-born shoot, which is around 2 weeks old, but don’t fret. You can still get great, quality photos, no matter what age baby is.

For the purposes of this blog, we will focus on babies under the age of 1.

This may be your first photo shoot with baby, and you are both excited, yet also nervous.Don’t be!Let the baby lead you.

As a mother, I understand that having a camera pointed at your new baby is somewhat disconcerting and intrusive. But, you know what?Your baby doesn’t mind, especially when the photo shoot is handled in a fun and professional manner.

We want baby, and you, to feel like you are having a chat with a long-lost friend. We don’t even want you or baby to realise there is a flashing camera only an arm’s length away.

And, the secret to a successful and stress-free baby photo shoot, is to let the baby lead you.

What do we mean by Let the Baby lead you?

Babies are naturally inquisitive, naturally photogenic, and naturally relaxed, no matter their age, and achieving a successful photo shoot, means following a few rules.

1.Never photograph a tired or hungry baby

This actually applies to kids and adults too.Think about it.Do you feel like having someone cajole and coax you, with a long lens camera pointed into your face, when you are cranky and ‘hangry’?

Not very likely.

And, your baby will feel and react the same way.

So, plan your photo shoot around baby’s nap time and ensure they have a nice full belly, not too full, mind you.We don’t want a “piggy eat – piggy sleep” scenario either.

2.Keep it Short and Sweet

Babies have a very short attention span, and in fact, can also get titchy if they are over-stimulated, so the trick is to keep it between 30 and 40 minutes, max!

This requires some planning ahead of time, so keep reading for further tips on producing amazing photos with your baby.

3.Bring along their Fave Toys

While we will have a myriad of brightly coloured playthings and props to get your baby’s attention, their fave toy will bring comfort and relaxation to them.Pop a few in a box and bring along to the photo shoot. We will direct you on when we think it’s a good time to bring them out.Think about a theme as well, although, natural is best.

4.Clothing and Temperature

The room temperature should be a nice balance between cool and comfortable.Try to ensure an optimum temperature, so baby is comfortable, especially if taking naked shots. If you are not sure, purchase a cheap thermometer or ask us to bring one along.Keep a fan ready or a heater, dependent on what season we are shooting in.If you are coming to our studios, then we will ensure the temperature is perfect. On a further temperature note, have a bottle of water handy, for you and baby. This is thirsty work!

When it comes to a baby shoot, as a mom, we get quite excited to bring out all those dressy outfits, but really, baby will be most comfortable with the bare minimum on.

Our suggestion is to bring two simple outfits with, which we can start them off in, and slowly strip down to either nappy and/or birthday suit.

5.The Poses

Natural is best, so pretend that the camera isn’t even there.Just play and be with baby, as if you were alone at home. You will be surprised at what amazing images will be produced from a short photo shoot. You will look at them and ask yourself how we managed to capture that moment.

We work within baby’s developmental stages, i.e. tummy time, crawling, walking, and on-the-go-busy! No matter their age, we will get the perfect shot.

Relax, focus in on baby, and enjoy the moments. We will do the rest.
